The retail edition is a real magazine, thirty-six pages of it, and it reads as the genuine article all the way through. Then, at page 21, it becomes yours.
This is the only copy of POLYC you can order here. The plain retail edition, without your pages, is sold from shop counters, and the trade edition goes to shops only. If you’d rather have the plain one, the shop where you found this magazine has it.
The four pages
Reader of the Quarter. Your portrait, large, with a proper caption, and a profile written in POLYC’s voice from five answers you give us: how long you’ve been smoking, how you like to take it, your favourite time of day for it, the one thing you’d tell a first-timer, and what you do for a living or for fun. No jokes at your expense. It reads like the “meet a reader” page any real magazine runs.
The Tourist Tale. Two pages about one day in the city you’d most like to smoke in, with you as the traveller. Each tale describes a day out the way people actually smoke there. Your portrait sits in a small inset beside a photograph of the city. Two personal touches, no more: your travelling companion, and the one thing you never leave home without.
From your jar. Your bud, hash or rosin photographed as a reader submission, with a tasting note in your own words, lightly edited, credited to you.
The cities
Amsterdam, Berlin, Barcelona, Prague, Lisbon, Paris, Copenhagen, Vienna, Bangkok, Denver, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Reno, Portland, Seattle, New York, Toronto and Washington DC. A city gets added when three people ask for it.
How it works
- You send one portrait, one photo of your jar, your name as you want it printed, your home city, your dream city, the five answers, the companion, the one thing, and a two-line tasting note.
- We write the pages, lay them out, and send you a proof.
- When you say yes, we send the invoice. Payment is by IBAN transfer or Zelle. Nothing prints until it’s paid and nothing prints until you’ve approved the proof.
- Your copy is printed and posted to you.
€126 plus shipping for your copy. Extra copies of the same edition, for the people in your life who’ll want one, €45 each. Shipping is on the invoice, quoted before anything is printed.

House rules for photographs
Only you in the photographs; friends need their own release form. Everyone pictured is over 18. No shop fronts, logos, menus or prices. No nudity. Your own photos only, with the right to give them to us. Every word you give us is checked before print; we edit for length and take out shop names and prices. Cities are fine to name. Real shops, clubs and coffeeshops never appear.
Your photographs and words are kept for 90 days after shipping, in case a copy is lost in the post, then deleted. The whole of it is in the privacy policy.
Every quarter is a new edition, so every quarter is a new set of pages. When a new issue comes out, the previous one stays available and can still be ordered as a custom copy. Found this magazine on a shop counter? You can also order at that counter and the shop does the rest.
